Air Hitam is a Malay name for "black water". "Air" means water and "Hitam" means black in Malay. It is also known to have many different variances of naming, such as Air Itam, Ayer Itam and Ayer Hitam. It is a common name for many places around Malaysia, including one in Johor. In this case, we are referring to the one and only famous tourist town in Penang.

Despite its humble beginning as a market town, it houses two internationally well-known tourist destinations in Penang. They are the famous Kek Lok Si Temple and Penang Hill. A reputed Chinese secondary school, Chung Ling High School also has its address in the area for many generations. It is a highly populated residential areas with many shops, shopping centers, and a public swimming pool in close proximity. One of its famous local delicacies in "asam laksa", which has been voted as the 7th most delicious food in the World by the CNN.

Due to its popularity as a residential destination, many housing projects have sprouted around the area. A township Bandar Baru Air Itam or better known as Farlim was formed out of the high demands.
